Yeah, the only thing that might indicate that the Kansas City area casinos are actually riverboats is the fact that they are all close to the mighty Missouri river. In fact, they ARE boats. Each casino is built on platform barges, but float in moats filled with river water. That’s due to the state law that governed where and how the casinos could be built originally. Seems silly now, doesn’t it?

Anyway, Harrah’s has been my favorite casino for most of the time they have been open. Right now it isn’t as easy to access, due to the construction on I-35 north from downtown. When the new Paseo bridge is completed, it will be easier than ever to get there.

Parking is never an issue, with valet service always available for a fee, or free if you lose enough money to become a “diamond” card player. Yes, do sign up for their rewards card, even though you don’t have to now. You will get offers in the mail including free slot play and cheaper hotel room rates. Why not let them throw a little money back at YOU for playing there?

Slots are of course plentiful, and you can usually find your favorite table game. Most of the slots have converted to newer styles, with everything from penny to $5 (maybe higher? I don’t hit the high stakes area) denominations available. Whatch yourself on the penny slots. Most max bets are at least $1.25 with some as high as $5.00!

Table minimums are always raised on the weekends and holidays, so if you want to only play for $5, stick to weekdays, as any $5 tables are always packed on the weekends (like at MOST casinos). Let It Ride and Caribbean Stud are still available, two games that some area casinos have eliminated.

The level of service at Harrah’s has always been top notch, as far as I’m concerned. Dealers are almost always friendly, drink servers are attentive (don’t forget to tip!) and pit bosses get to know the regulars and have a good time with all the dealers and players.

It’s a comfortable atmosphere, never too smokey, unless you are sitting right next to someone who is puffing away. And if that’s the case, I’ve never had anyone refuse to move their cig to the other side of the machine or table for me.

Food choices have expanded, with the standard buffet and several other restaurants to choose from. Since I haven’t eaten there in years now, I will refrain from commenting… Please feel free to add your experiences!

I haven’t stayed in the hotel since the expansion, but the original hotel was serviceable and well appointed. I imagine the newer tower has upgraded rooms. Anyone know for sure? As always, I’m happy to take any comments – feel free to agree or disagree, and add your own insights!

According to my son, there is no shortage of places to play paintball in the KC area. From Lawrence, KS to Jaeger’s in the caves below World’s of Fun, you can always find a place to play.

Paintball? You mean where you run around and blast your friends? Oh, yeah.

In Lawrence, you can go to Drop Zone Paintball. They have a great staging field that is actually four fields in one. A two-story castle is a great place to be a sniper, and plenty if bunkers and towers, hills and trees. Paint, CO2 and air are available on site, but the pro shop is in town. Cost ranges from $15.00 per person for walk-on with your own equipment, or complete equipment rentals for $31.00. They also have tournaments, and groups are always welcome as well. No walk-ons during the week. Check their website for more details: Drop Zone Paintball

Jaeger’s Paintball is located in the caves below World’s of Fun. Weather is never a problem here, as it is always a cool 56 degrees! Smaller surface fields are available, but the real fun is down under. Barrels, columns, and hideouts are plentiful. Good team play location, even for the people your meet by chance there. They also feature Laser Tag, and have a pro shop on site. Here’s their site: Jaeger’s Paintball

Know of other locations? Post a comment!

Free during the week, and only $2.00 Friday through Sunday, this is a great place to take young kids, even up to around early teens.

We went last weekend with a couple of the grandkids and they loved it. It’s not so big that you are worn out completely by the end of the visit, but not so small that it doesn’t seem worth the trip. Fully handicap accessible, as far as I can tell. My wife had minimal trouble in her power chair.

Great site for school or church group outings. Birthday packages are available. Pony rides, mining camp, Kanza indian village, cows, chickens, goats and more for the kids to see. You can even take the kids fishing for perch! Only a couple more bucks to let the kids mine for gems, ride the ponies or feed the goats, so go for it!

Location: South Overland Park, KS. 138th & Switzer. Easy to see from Switzer, but you have to wind through the soccer complex just a bit to get to the parking area. See their website here: Link to Deana Rose Farmstead

I’ve lived in the Kansas City area my whole life, so I’ve got a pretty good idea of some fun things to do around town. However, I’m always open to suggestions, so feel free to comment and add your own fun things!

On each review I include pricing information, and always try to note the accessibility of the venue or event. Is it wheelchair accessible? Is it EASILY accessible? Hope this site helps you find just the right thing to do!
