Harrah’s North Kansas City “Riverboat” Casino
Yeah, the only thing that might indicate that the Kansas City area casinos are actually riverboats is the fact that they are all close to the mighty Missouri river. In fact, they ARE boats. Each casino is built on platform barges, but float in moats filled with river water. That’s due to the state law that governed where and how the casinos could be built originally. Seems silly now, doesn’t it?
Anyway, Harrah’s has been my favorite casino for most of the time they have been open. Right now it isn’t as easy to access, due to the construction on I-35 north from downtown. When the new Paseo bridge is completed, it will be easier than ever to get there.
Parking is never an issue, with valet service always available for a fee, or free if you lose enough money to become a “diamond” card player. Yes, do sign up for their rewards card, even though you don’t have to now. You will get offers in the mail including free slot play and cheaper hotel room rates. Why not let them throw a little money back at YOU for playing there?
Slots are of course plentiful, and you can usually find your favorite table game. Most of the slots have converted to newer styles, with everything from penny to $5 (maybe higher? I don’t hit the high stakes area) denominations available. Whatch yourself on the penny slots. Most max bets are at least $1.25 with some as high as $5.00!
Table minimums are always raised on the weekends and holidays, so if you want to only play for $5, stick to weekdays, as any $5 tables are always packed on the weekends (like at MOST casinos). Let It Ride and Caribbean Stud are still available, two games that some area casinos have eliminated.
The level of service at Harrah’s has always been top notch, as far as I’m concerned. Dealers are almost always friendly, drink servers are attentive (don’t forget to tip!) and pit bosses get to know the regulars and have a good time with all the dealers and players.
It’s a comfortable atmosphere, never too smokey, unless you are sitting right next to someone who is puffing away. And if that’s the case, I’ve never had anyone refuse to move their cig to the other side of the machine or table for me.
Food choices have expanded, with the standard buffet and several other restaurants to choose from. Since I haven’t eaten there in years now, I will refrain from commenting… Please feel free to add your experiences!
I haven’t stayed in the hotel since the expansion, but the original hotel was serviceable and well appointed. I imagine the newer tower has upgraded rooms. Anyone know for sure? As always, I’m happy to take any comments – feel free to agree or disagree, and add your own insights!
